What changes the odds

What you can do

  • If you're struggling, talk to someone today — a helpline, your doctor or someone you trust.
  • Depression and other mental illnesses are treatable.
  • Worried about someone? Ask them directly how they are, listen, and stay with them — asking doesn't put the idea in their head.

What the evidence says

  • A personal safety plan made with a clinician, plus follow-up calls, was linked to 45% fewer suicidal behaviours over the next six months. — Stanley et al., JAMA Psychiatry 2018
